PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Background
Unity Lite is a simple 3D Game Creator that runs on the web, introducing Unity Editor concepts to an audience of first-time creators. By doing so, the company significantly increases Unity’s SAM from professional developers to students and casual developers.

With an emphasis on community, Unity provides a platform where thousands of creators, gamers, and enthusiasts can come share their latest projects, play innovative games, and provide feedback to help each other improve.‍

Problem Space
Educators want to use Unity to teach game design and development; however, the Unity Engine is complex beyond the needs of beginners. For example, the Unity Engine has steep technical requirements (such as a high-end PC) that many schools can’t meet.

Unity Lite is an upcoming solution based on Unity Play and Struckd Studio, but it’s for individual users. With plans to deprecate Struckd Studio when Unity Lite rolls out, Unity needed an idea of what features would best benefit educators and students.

Our problem statement became...
How might we increase the learnability of Unity Lite to foster collaboration for secondary school students and educators?
THE SOLUTION
Solution
My team and I at Berkeley Innovation conducted user research with secondary school students and educators, compiling detailed reports to capture key insights and pain points. Based on our findings, we developed clear requirements for new features as well as improvements to existing functionalities. We also designed mockups and high-fidelity prototypes for all relevant student and educator flows to help bring these solutions to life.
